Trove Tuesday - Natives of Scotland

November 30th, St Andrew's Day, is Scotland's National Day. Many early arrivals in  the Lake Macquarie District had roots in Scotland. 

The following eleven persons from our area were recorded in the newspapers on Trove as being a "Native of Scotland. If these images are difficult to read you can access the articles from the links that follow each clipping.

Mr John Lessels of Teralba (Transcript- Image of original very fuzzy)

TERALBA
Mr. John Lessels, who died suddenly at Teralba on Thursday, was in his 71st year, and was a very much respected resident of the town. Mr. Lessels was a native of Boness, Scotland, and came to
the country early in 1848. He took up residence in Teralba 34 years ago, and was one of the pioneers of this district. In 1887 he, with Messrs.. J. Blair (deceased) and J. Fairfield cut the first sod of the
Great Northern Colliery, now known as the Pacific Coal Company, Limited, Teralba, and drove the tunnel right through. He retired five years ago from the Northern Extended Colliery, Teralba. His wife
died four months ago, and he is survived by six daughters; two sons, 27 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. His interment took place in the Presbyterian Cemetery,Sandgate, in the presence of
many old friends, the Rev. Mr. Walkin officiating. Wreaths were sent by the following:--Mr. and Mrs. G. Durie, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Goodall, Mr.: and Mrs. M.M'Crae; Mr; and Mrs. A. Vallance, Mr.
and Mrs. F. Parkes, Mr. and Mrs. J. Beslem, Mr and Mrs. L. Haydon, Presbyterian, Church, Northern Extended Colliery, from family, and from grandchildren, Wor. Bro. D. Lone, Wor. .Bro. H,
Thorncroft and Bros. I. H. Jones and J. Rowley '(members of the Masonic Lodge, Toronto, No. 243), acted, as pall-bearers. The chief mourners were Mr.  R. Lessels, and Mr. A. Lessels (sons), Mrs. T. Alpin, Mrs. J.. Horn, Mrs. A. Biggers, Mrs. W. Sherwood, Mrs T. Donohue, and Mrs., F.  Hooger, (daughters).

OBITUARY
MR. JOHN BELL
Mr. John Bell, who died in Newcastle
Hospital on Saturday, was 49. He had
lived at Belmont. A native of Scotland
Mr Bell. served in the Grest War with
the 4th Battalion A.I.F, and was award-
ed the Military Medal. The funeral took
place to Belmont Presbyterian Cemetery
on Sunday.
