Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.

53 years ago today, on the 7th May 1969, Private Raymond Thomas Wharton, 35th Battalion, butcher from 40 Eveleigh Street, Redfern, New South Wales and 10 Dickinson Street, Charlestown, N.S.W. (1933) and 14 Bishopsgate Street, Wickham, N.S.W. (1936) and High Street, Tenterfield, N.S.W. (1936) and South Gippsland, Victoria (1936) and Cairns, North Queensland (1938) and Surfers Paradise, Queensland and 3 Hexham Street, Kahibah, N.S.W. (1966), father of five, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. CATHOLIC 3-95. 134.

Born at Sydney, New South Wales on the 15th March 1897 to James and Minnie Wharton; husband of Evelyn Wharton nee Ford (married 1925, New Lambton, N.S.W., divorced 1941, died 1988, Parkes Cemetery of 16 Second Street, Lambton, N.S.W.), Raymond enlisted April 1916 with the 36th Battalion at the Sports Ground, Sydney, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 15.2.1918 (not stated).

Wounded in action - 6.5.1918 (GSW buttock, left leg, left foot).

Raymond returned home March 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 23rd May 1919.

I have not located Mr. Wharton’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite January 2020 in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Mr. Wharton’s gravesite had been attended to at some stage, an old cross with timber surrounds, not forgotten by descendants, would love to make contact.

Also served WW2 (1st Garrison Battalion, Q50710, enlisted 25.1.1941, discharged 7.10.1941).

Good News! 2 Returned Diggers from The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery will have their Honour and Dignity restored.

Lance Corporal William Wallace Croker (M.M.), 8th & 14th Battalions (Reg No-6804), teamster and carter from Redhead, New South Wales and Stuart Street, Charlestown, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 22nd November 1936, age 45. ANGLICAN 1-17. 41.

Admitted to hospital 4.5.1917 (influenza).

Wounded in action - 28.3.1918 (not stated), 18.9.1918 (GSW right forearm, severe).

Awarded Military Medal 10th October 1919.

Older brother Robert Wilson (14th Battalion, Reg No-6711, born 1889, KIA 15.10.1917) memorialised same location.

The Croker brother’s names have been inscribed on the Redhead War Memorial, Redhead Public School Roll of Honour, Dudley Public School Roll of Honor and the Dudley War Memorial.

I submitted an application to DVA December 2021 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite, and this was accepted February 2022.

Private Oliver Robert Shaw, 9th Australian Machine Gun Company & 33rd Battalion (Reg No-638), also known as Patsy, ironworker and stove fitter (Fletcher’s Stove Works, Woollahra, N.S.W.), from Winship Street, Hamilton West, New South Wales and Adamstown? N.S.W. and Underwood Street, Paddington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 29th November 1929, age 47. ANGLICAN 1-28. 138.

Admitted to hospital 8.4.1918 (septic hand).

Wounded in action - 23.5.1918 (GSW leg), 8.8.1918 (GSW arm).

Mr. Shaw’s name has not been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial or the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor or the Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

A Forgotten Digger of The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery, Honour and Dignity to be restored.
84 years ago today, on the Wednesday morning of the 15th December 1937, Private William Moses, also known as Tot, 33rd Battalion (Reg No-7295), miner from Dudley Road, Charlestown, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. METHODIST 4-07. 68.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 21st February 1875 to Thomas and Susan Moses nee Hyde; husband of Lillian M Moses nee Mitchell (married 1899, Adamstown, N.S.W., died 1920?), Tot enlisted January 1917 with the 2nd Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

I located William resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so January 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

85 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 22nd November 1936 (7 funerals on this day), Lance Corporal William Wallace Croker (M.M.), 14th Battalion (Reg No-6804), teamster from Redhead, New South Wales and Stuart Street, Charlestown, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 45. Mr. Croker’s name has been inscribed on the Redhead War Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 14th May 1950 & 11th November 2000, 66 names inscribed, 6 Fallen), Redhead Public School Roll of Honour, Dudley Public School Roll of Honor and the Dudley War Memorial.

There is no indication inscribed on William’s gravesite headstone of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at the Croker gravesite in remembrance of William’s sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Trove Tuesday - New Collection on Trove

Our favourite free online newspaper archive Trove recently announced that a collection of Jewish newspapers from Australia had gone online in its collection. A major benefit of this collection is that it covers the years from 1971-2020, a longer period than many other publications available on Trove.
