Trove Tuesday - Easter Happenings

We dived into Trove this week to learn about Lake Macquarie happenings in Easters past. There were many articles about sailing and Regattas so we sought out other activities.

There were Brides at Boolaroo.

Trove Tuesday - Stormy Weather

The storms that appear from time to time can cause problems to our otherwise peaceful existence on the Lake. We are not the only generation to be inconvenienced by storms and floods.

Colonial Massacres

We appreciate that Jennifer Debenham from the University of Newcastle braved the elements to be the  guest speaker at our meeting last Saturday. Unfortunately due to conditions that kept our members away Jennifer only faced a small live audience that was boosted by those who joined us on Zoom.

Jennifer Debenham at LMFHG

Jennifer, a Research Assistant on The Colonial Frontier Massacres in Australia, 1788-1930 Project, reported on her research and the history of the project that was lead by by Prof. Lyndall Ryan at the University of Newcastle in consultation with The Wollotuka Institute and AIATSIS.

Jennifer demonstrated how to investiagte the map and database that was the result of the team's work. Navigation of the site is easy and intuitive. Jennifer was most generous in responding to the many questions posed by our attendees.

All Australians should examine the map and database site to learn about this dark period in our history.

Celebrating St Patrick's Day

Trove tells us that Toronto and Spier's or Speers Point were destinations for St Patrick's Day picnics for people from Maitland and Newcastle in the early 1900s but finding articles about celebrations from Lake Macquarie parishes has proved difficult.

Some digging on Trove has found the following articles.

1940 'CATHOLIC CHURCH SPORTS AT WANGI', Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate (NSW : 1876 - 1954), 21 March, p. 11. , viewed 17 Mar 2021, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article140530046

We would love to hear some St Patrick's Day reminiscences from locals in Lake Macquarie.
