Trove Tuesday - When Daylight Saving came to Town

As we are entering our first week of Daylight Saving we consulted the Newcastle Morning Herald archives on Trove to see what residents in earlier times felt daylight saving was introduced.

One wonders if these anonymous Letters to the Editor were all penned by one hand or if it was a vocal minority who were not in favour of daylight saving.

Trove Tuesday - David Watkin Humphreys

An article in the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate (NSW : 1876 - 1954) on the 5th October 1915 tells us that "Private David Humphreys was tendered a public farewell on Tuesday evening prior to his leaving for the front."

Two years later another newspaper reports that Humphreys had been wounded.

Shortly after he was wounded Humphreys and his mate, G W Stone,  wrote a letter home.

Humphreys who married an English lass, Jessie, returned home and was working as a miner until his tragic death in 1938.

Trove Tuesday - Gwen's Letter

 This letter from Gwen Boyd of Swansea won a prize in the Daily Telegraph's Children's pages. Perhaps Gwen carved out a career as a journalist.
